The Literacy for All Conference content is provided by the National Center on Improving Literacy (NCIL), Decoding Dyslexia Maryland and St. Mary's County Public Schools.  

LIVE-STREAMING: The opening remarks by Decoding Dyslexia MD at 8:30am and the Keynote, delivered by NCIL’s Sarah Sayko, at 9:00AM, were live-streamed by WETA/Reading Rockets on DDMD’s and is available on the link posted above.

SESSION RECORDINGS: will be available in the next few weeks and are made possible by NCIL and WETA/Reading Rockets.


Session Information

CONTENT FOR SCHOOL DISTRICT PERSONNEL

The break out sessions begin at 10;30 and focus on evidence aligned best practices to support students who are at risk for reading difficulties and dyslexia using a prevention framework of strong screening and science aligned core reading instruction along with evidence based supplemental and intensive interventions. NCIL will provide 2 sessions on screening for reading difficulties and 2 sessions on reading instruction and interventions -- sessions will be held separately for school district personnel in Room 431. The screening for reading and dyslexia presentation will include a presentation by Dr. Kelli Cummings, Assistant Professor, University of MD College Park, Scott Szczerbiak, Director of Special Education & Cortney Dvorak, Supervisor of Instruction in Reading, St. Mary’s County Public Schools -- NCIL and SMCPS are partnering on a program to implement screening in St. Mary's County for PK-2. Please join them to learn more about this effort.

CONFERENCE CONTENT (Keynote & Legislative Update, Livestream)

9:00-10:15, KEYNOTE. Join us for the Keynote session to hear from Deputy Director of NCIL, Sarah Sayko about the important of reading screening and how core instruction and supplemental reading interventions can support and respond to screening data. Put these ideas to work in your classroom!

9:30 LEGISLATIVE UPDATE: Delegate Luedtke will join us and provide an overview of the Blueprint for Maryland legislation (Kirwan) and provide details on the Reading and Dyslexia Handbook bills, HB 718 and SB 575.


SCREENING & RESPONSE TO SCREENING. Parents and dyslexia practitioners will learn about best practices for reading screening, core instruction and interventions for dyslexia from NCIL experts. Please join us and find out how screening should look in the classroom and how to interpret the screening data to support your student.

PARENT AND SCHOOL RELATIONSHIP BUILDING. Sarah Sayko will describe partnerships that create positive student outcomes. Please join us to learn more about how to approach your school and the questions to ask and the answers that can be provided to help your student learn to read.

CUPCAKES, COFFEE & CONVERSATION. Delegates and Senators are invited to rooms 170 and 180 for the annual Dyslexia Advocacy Day open house. Please invite your legislator to attend even if you've planned to meet with them in their offices. It's always nice to mingle over cake and coffee!

COMMUNITY PARTNER OPEN HOUSE. Organizations that support students with dyslexia and reading difficulties will be available during the day to chat about their services and materials to support families. Please stop by their tables and learn all about it!

STUDENT SESSION. Bring your students for a down to earth session on cultivating advocacy skills and growing their personal dyslexia stories and testimonials. Each student will create a special earth-focused project for their legislators! PDF Flyer
